My grandfather, James Lemasters, from Paden City, WV (USA) was a POW at Stalag 7A for approx. 15 months. His family had been notified that he was dead and a Purple Heart with his name engraved on the back was given to them. Later, he came walking home one day, much to the surprise of his family. He was given another Purple Heart. He died in 1982 in his mid fifties from a massive heart attack when I was only 8 years old. He didn't talk much about his experiences, but I know that he lost some of his hearing and was wounded in the leg. Unfortunately his records were lost in the St. Louis fire and I know very little about his military service. I wondered how such a mix up could happen that his family was told he was dead, then later he comes walking home like something out of a movie.
